Before this stadium comes into existence the games were played at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s stadium by the same name in Ahmedabad in the Navrangpura side. But in 1982 the government donates the land about 50 acres to build the new stadium at the Bank of the Sabarmati River.
Here at this venue Sunil Gavaskar was the first Indian player that scores 10,000 test runs on this venue and he skilled to accomplish this against the Pakistan team in 1987.
