44.5°C, Ahmedabad witnesses hottest day in 5 years

AHMEDABAD: One person died of heat stroke as the city blazed at 44.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Weather data suggested this was the hottest day during the last five-year period — the city had recorded 44.5 degrees on May 15, 2009.

While a 48-year-old woman died of heatstroke at VS Hospital, eight others were admitted to hospitals with heat-related illnesses. The weatherman forecasts that the heat wave will persist on Sunday as well.

The sweltering heat has sapped life from the city for the last couple of days, forcing most Amdavadis to stay indoors and for those outside to seek protection with headgear. On Saturday as well, the roads wore a deserted look in the afternoon after the continuous rise in temperature. "I had to visit a hospital to meet an ailing relative, but called off the plan to avoid the heat," said Shreyas Patel, a businessman. "It's not just the heat that is worrying me. I'm also worried about the rising electricity bill due to using the air-conditioner."
